Beth Myriam in Nepal

The Beth Myriam began distributing food to poor families in the district of Surkhet around 11 years ago in 2015. It is an outreach program supported by Poonam Maharjan who is responsible for the project and who lives in Kathmandu. This Beth Myriam gives funds to the Sisters of Charity at the Navnjyoti Center in Balwater in Kathmandu. The sisters come from Nazareth, Kentucky, USA and have two mission centers: one at the Navnjyoti Center for handicapped children and the other in Surkhet.

They give rice, lentils, potatoes among other food items to poor families and to the blind and crippled people who are homeless, living in the slum. They help 38 families (60 people in all). Sister Marina from the Sisters of Charity helps in distributing the food. The Surkhet district where the feeding takes place is a 16 hour drive from the Kathmandu and is located in the mid-western part of Nepal.

Poonam writes that recently one new family needed food. Ram Majhi, the father, has four children. His wife died of cancer. He spent all his money on his wife’s treatment. Now he has lost his wife and all his money, and he even took a loan for her treatment. He doesn’t have anything to feed his four children. His older son is not stable physically or mentally. The other three children have left their school due to poor conditions. This family is indeed happy and thankful to the Beth Myriam for this well-needed support.

Feed one child

Every child deserves food. If you cannot feed 100 children, feed just one. With as little as $18 per month, a week’s worth of coffee, you can provide all that a child needs. Think of that. What good you will do to a soul with so little money.

Thank you for your loving interest and care towards feeding the poor and needy.
