Pensione literal translation is pension. But it has nothing to do with pensions. In Rome there are many small hotels built in condominiums. That is they don’t have independent entrances. Normally they occupy one or two floors of a building. Most of them are family run. They are the lowest rated hotels. Still they are quite good and prices are very low compared to normal high rated hotels.
Rooms are clean and most of them also have a bathroom like hotels.
Then there are the ‘pensions’ run by nuns. These form part of big buildings all pertaining to nun’s institutes and they reserve a number of rooms for accomodation. These are more or less like the other ‘pensions’ but many of them have late night restrictions which means all must be home by 10,30 pm or 11,30 pm or something like this. In view that all services are run by the nuns themselves they all go to sleep at a certain hour.
During this year, many nun’s convents have been literally transformed in normal hotels. All rooms and services have been re-done and refurbished and can compete with any 4 star hotels. However not many rooms are available in these convents-residence-hotels I would say for 50 people or so. Prices are quite convenient in the region of USD 45/60 per person for a single or double. The problem is most of them are already fully booked.
Language is not a problem because normally these people whether nuns or laity they all can speak minimum necessity to communicate in major languages. English is well known by all I would say.
Apart from the above when there are big groups from abroad it would be more convenient for them to deal with a local travel agency that «specialises» in the country of visit. Prices can be much cheaper because the agency negotiates special room rates.
