I have been reading Confronting Jezebel by Steve Sampson. It is a very good book and confirms Vassula’s approach to this problem. It is also a very good book for examination of conscience and will help us to understand the problem and give the correct advice to each other.

It is remarkable how this writer is so close to certain aspects of TLIG. The main strength of the book is that it makes the point – very clearly indeed – that those affected by the Jezebel spirit will not usually be «delivered» or healed very quickly. This is because there are patterns of thought and behavior involved which need to be changed. There is the essential need for REPENTANCE, but this is not to be understood as simply going to confession or repenting of sin. The kind of repentance required is actually CONVERSION which is, for some, a very long process. People who have been affected or, we should say, influenced by the Jezebel spirit for a long time also need a long time to recover.

We must beware of those who say, «I have been prayed over (often more than once) and seen a spiritual director and I am now free of it». This spirit can put on a good act and encourage its «client» to put on a show of humility and repentance which then turns out to be false – something that Vassula has correctly discerned more than once.

This book confirms Vassula’s understanding of this dangerous nuisance and it reminds us to be vigilant and to take care, especially when people defend themselves by saying how sorry they are and that they are now «free». It is seldom so easy because of the need to change habits of thought and behavior.

This is not to say that change and healing are impossible – only that it takes time and patience, and the obvious signs of healing are that the person has been able to act in a different way. We must always be careful of the spirit «putting on an act». Sadly this is something that the person also does consciously – or, at best, half-consciously – so that the person is also partly responsible for presenting a false picture.

This book contains some very good teaching about the dangers of the «flesh» (human weakness) and for that reason is good for examination of conscience. Above all, it completely confirms Vassula’s perceptions.
