Question:
Several Roman Pontiffs, the Church’s Saints and even Jesus Christ in Church approved prophetic revelations use the expression “Co-redemptrix” in relation to the Blessed Virgin. Since this expression is contained in several Church publications in circulation today,
many of which bear the official seals of Magisterial approval, can we continue to read and learn from these works?
Answer:
Before offering a theological response, I wish to emphasize that my addressing this matter is a duty the Church requests of her “qualified theologians” and is contained in the CDF’s Instruction, Donum Veritatis, On the Ecclesial Vocation of the Theologian, arts. 20 and 30. To the extent that the theologian’s vocation and duty require him “to investigate and explain the
doctrine of the Faith” and “to preserve the sacred deposit of revelation, to examine it more deeply, to explain, teach, and defend it for the service of the People of God and for the whole world’s salvation,”1
In answer to the above question, yes one may, and is in fact encouraged to continue to read and learn from those publications containing the statements of the Roman Pontiffs, the Church’s saints and her approved prophetic literature, which include references to Mary as “Co-redemptrix.” The reason is as follows.
